The Cube Microplex

The Cube is a volunteer run experimental art and social dreaming space programming music, theatre, film, talks and obscure Avant-garde events.

For the last 8 years I’ve been a core member of The Cube in many roles including producer, programmer, event manager, artist, community member, workshop facilitator, access lead, front of house worker, usher, bartender, cleaner and cook. We work in a co-operative, anti-heirarchal way, with all vols invited into these roles and more.

Events I’ve programmed and managed at The Cube include theatre shows ADHD the Musical and The Lodger by Dora Colquhoun, Break Reality puppet cabaret and Surreal D.I.Y Puppet Musical by Bean Pig Puppets, and In Your Own Time discussion on socially engaged artists and food justice by Sean Roy Parker.

I’ve produced my own events Spoonie Rave, Balm and Tonic and mask required film screenings. This year I facilitated a series of internal workshops for volunteers on the theme of collective care, giving us the time to pause, rest and reflect on our work outside of the usual busy events and meetings. I’ve helped out with countless events and participated in the inner workings of The Cube for many years.

Currently I’m leading on access improvements within the building and I recently organised getting a hearing loop installed to make our films and discussions more accessible to deaf and hard of hearing folks.

A note on this page: As I write about my experience at The Cube in a ‘CV’ format I feel like I’m diminishing it. The Cube is an important and special space to me - it’s a community, a way of relating, creating and living, rather than existing in a separate category of ‘work’. The volunteering we do at The Cube is for the space, for artists and us as a collective. We call ourselves amateurs - defined as ‘doing it for The Love’.
